How To Charge Your Electric Car On The Streets Of UK Cities.
Electric powered cars - On street charging.
Inspired when out and about in the City Centre of Peterborough recently I see that you can now park in a parking bay and are able to charge your electric car whilst doing your shopping.
I knew that there were points around the City of London but never realised that this had become a local service provided by local government.
Sad to say, though, there were no cars charging at the time. It is good to see that in line with technology improvements that more electric and hybrid vehicles are coming to the market.
Electric charging stations are vital to the uptake of green technology vehicles in my opinion.
Electric powered cars are the future and car manufacturers are seeing this with new models such as the Vauxhall Ampera probably being the most stylish.
Now this article is not to be an advert for electric powered cars so I will quit while I am ahead in the vehicle recommendations or manufacturer name dropping. No, the main reason for this article is to highlight that the most important steps are being taken now in this country to make green motoring an alternative and really available to all who are likely to use it.
Source East.
In the East of England, which covers the Peterborough area is a company called Source East. It is the charging network for the East of England. Anybody with an electric vehicle can join the scheme by logging onto their website, registering and paying a £10 per year fee to use their charging stations. For that you get a card for access to the charging points and use of the electricity. As far as I am aware it allows you to use neighbouring counties power points such as the East Midlands. It is my understanding that charges to join other schemes may vary so it is necessary to check their websites for up to date costs to join.
It will be the costs of these schemes that will determine how many people use the charging points as well as the popularity of green vehicles in the future. Local councils and scheme bosses please take note of this. In the past schemes in this country where a minority of people who need a service usually end up paying a premium for the privelege. In the case of sustainability and green technology this should not be the case.
At a cost of £10 per year to use charging points in our region I would be seriously intersted as to the viability of having an electric or hybrid vehicle.
Locations of Charging Points.
It is reported that there are around 800 charging points around the East of England with more coming online all the time. It is also said that there are charging points within 25 miles of all businesses and residential areas within the region. This means that you should never run out of power whilst out and about in the region. This is additional to the charging point which, as an owner of an electric vehicle that you would have at home.
Maybe there would be scope in the future for owners of electric vehicles to make their home charging points available to other owners of electric cars who find themselves in their location. A scheme would and probably could be developed under a similar guise to the Source East scheme, who knows?
For rhe exact locations of the charge points log onto the Source East website.
